Identify Your Minox 8×11 Camera
A practical guide to recognising Minox 8×11 models.
Model Name
Many Minox 8×11 cameras do not have the model letter printed on the body. Identification is therefore based on physical features rather than markings.
There are a few documented exceptions:
- Cameras exported to the United States during the 1960s and early 1970s were engraved with a “B” or “C” to prevent grey importing.
- Italian‑market Minox C cameras were engraved “FI,” reflecting the Italian importer.
- Late black LX cameras sold in the United States had “MINOX” applied in white lettering on the front.
Later models (EC, ECX) are clearly marked, but earlier cameras require closer inspection of construction details.
Body Construction
- Riga Minox — stainless‑steel body with brass internal components, distinctive machining, and early serial numbers.
- Minox II / A / IIIs — aluminium body, meterless, smooth top plate.
- Minox B / BL — aluminium body with built‑in meter window on the left side of the top plate.
- Minox C — longer body to accommodate electronic circuitry.
- Minox LX / TLX / CLX — shorter body than the C, reflecting improved electronics.
- Minox EC / ECX — simplified design, fixed focus, plastic‑coated construction
