Minox 8×11 mm Film Processing
Processing, scanning, and cassette refilling for all Minox 8×11 mm cameras.
Services cover B/W, colour (C‑41), and slide (E‑6) film, including legacy and
obsolete emulsions where salvage is possible.
Start here:
If you are new to Minox film, or using an inherited or stored camera,
this section provides the essentials for safe loading, correct counter
settings, and realistic expectations of the 8×11 mm format.
Format overview
Minox 8×11 mm negatives are extremely small. In physical area they sit closer
to Kodak Disc film than to 110, but with a precision lens and flat film plane
that deliver far sharper results than Disc ever achieved.
Summary:
Minox is effectively microfilm photography — small, sharp, and unique.
Exposure accuracy matters, and high‑resolution scanning helps, but the format
remains governed by physics.
- Minox 8×11 mm: 8×11 mm frame, microfilm‑like behaviour
- 110 film: 13×17 mm, more forgiving, “small 35 mm”
- Disc film: 8×10 mm, similar area but far lower resolution
Historical notes
Minox cameras have a long record of serious photographic use. In September 1959,
National Geographic photographed Etruscan tomb paintings underground using
a Minox loaded with Anscochrome — the only camera small enough to manoeuvre in
the confined space.
A more modern appearance occurred in a 2022 Spanish Netflix series set aboard a
1949 cruise ship, where a strip of modern Minox 8×11 mm colour slides was used
as a prop — a harmless anachronism for those familiar with the format.
Film identification
Match the wording printed on the cassette shell. This determines the correct
process and whether salvage is required.
- Riga / early: 10 DIN, 17 DIN → B/W; “ANSOCHROME” → B/W salvage
- Agfa CN: CN17 / CN18 / CN‑22 → C‑41 cross‑process
- Agfa CT: CT17 / CT18 → B/W salvage
- Minocolor: early → C‑41 cross‑process; II/III → C‑41
- Sharan: B/W, Colour (C‑41), Slide (E‑6)
Cassette compatibility
All Minox 8×11 mm cassettes fall into one of the following groups:
- Riga metal (1938–44): cap‑type, not LX‑compatible
- 1950s–68 metal: cap‑type, not LX‑compatible
- 1968–75 plastic cap‑type: LX‑compatible
- 1976+ plastic clip‑type: LX‑compatible, not backward‑compatible
- Minocolor II/III: clip‑type
- Sharan: clip‑type
- MS Hobbies aluminium/black: cap‑type, LX‑compatible
Loading guidance
Universal rule:
If the cassette is not flush when loading, remove it, wind on fractionally,
and re‑insert. This prevents gate and spacing faults.
Gate behaviour
- Manual: Riga, A, B
- Semi‑automatic: BL, C
- Automatic: LX, CLX, TLX, EC, ECX
Film plane geometry
- Flat (less tolerant): Riga, early C, LX/CLX/TLX, EC/ECX
- Curved (more tolerant): II, A, B, BL, late C
Counter settings
- Riga, II, A, B: set counter to 0 → 50
- BL, C, LX, CLX, TLX, EC, ECX: set counter to 36 → 0
Incorrect counter settings are the most common cause of spacing errors.
50‑exposure film
50‑exposure film fits metal cassettes only.
Plastic cassettes will bind, distort, and may damage the camera.
- Allowed: Riga metal, 1950s–68 metal, MS Hobbies aluminium/black
- Not allowed: any plastic cassette
