minox C 1968

image1440

The camera for the space age

The 'C' was the biggest technological breakthrough in 8x11mm photography since the original VEF MINOX. It simplified the prcoess of using an 8x11mm camera with automatic exposure,  a electronically-timed shutter and an interlock to stop blank exposures. The result was sales: 173,594 may have been produced. Even in 1981 the camera cost £300 (1981 price = £1,157 in 2020) in Jessops Leicester, where I saw my first one. Hmm:  1157 * 173,594 = £200m in 2020 money. So you have to ask yourself, what went wrong for Minox? (1988:  they went into administration, 1996, again)

Technical Details

The 'C' was a huge step up from the 'B'

Plus points

  • A new CdS meter
  • A lock between shutter and wind-on prevented wasted frames
  • Automatic exposure
  • LED slow speed and batery check indicator

Minus Points

  • Early PCB technology, harder and more expensive to repair
  • Recommend VPX27 5.6 LR43 battery converter

Using the Minox C

The extra length of the Minox C means that users avoid putting their fingers over the lens when taking the picture. You do not look through the lens when using ny Minox, but through the viewfinder. It is easy to place your fingers over the lens. Not until the Minox EC-X was a lens guard added to the camera front to warn users. Exposures are generally good with the stepless automatic exposure 'A' set on the shutter dial.

If you use the shutter manually, it will only work at the speeds on the dial,, no intermediate speeds are possible. There is a secret 'Bulb' setting if you set the shutter between 1/15th and 'A'.

Remember to remove the battery from the C if you are putting the camera way for some time. Battery leakage is especially damaging to this camera.
